Burgess Gaa Notes March 4th 2019

Junior A league:

 We have been drawn in group 2 of the Junior A league with Nenagh, Roscrea and Toomevara. Our opening game is due to take place on Saturday 23rd of March against Roscrea date and time to be confirmed.

 Junior B league:

 We will field a team in the Junior B league this year and are drawn in a group with Ballina, Kiladangan, Shannon Rovers, Ballinahinch and Moneygall. Our first game is due to take place on Saturday March 23rd against Ballina. Further fixture info to be confirmed.

Senior league Hurling:

Our seniors are due to begin their league campaign against Thurles Sarsfields in the Outside field in Thurles at 12pm Sunday 10th of March.

Membership:

Club membership is now due and is a very reasonable €50 for a player, €30 playing student and €20 for a social member. Gym membership is now also due at this time.

Club Lotto:

There was no winner of last Monday night’s jackpot. The numbers drawn were 3, 5, 20 & 27. The lucky dip winners were Susan Gill Kylebeg, Ellie Walsh Crannagh & Bob O’Brien Springfort. The Sellers prize went to Mike O’Flaherty. This weeks draw was in Barrys for a  Jackpot of €2,100.

Dinner Dance:

Last Saturday, on what was a fantastic night for the Parish, we held our joint dinner dance with the Burgess-Duharra camogie club. After a superb meal in the Lakeside Hotel Donie Nealon presented the medals to our Seamus O’Rian senior hurling champions. Pat Woods was later voted by the players as player of the year. The music was provided Ebony and dancing continued late into the night. Well done to all who organised a fantastic night for the club and we extend a special thanks to the staff of the Lakeside Hotel who looked after us so well. We would like to wish our hurlers and the Burgess-Duharra ladies the best of luck for the year to come.

Couch to 5K:

Our highly successful Couch to 5k programme kicked off on Tuesday in Kilcolman. If you have little or no running experience, this is perfect for you. New members are very important so if you’d like to get involved please contact Fergal on 085 7254855 if you would like to know more.

Cards:

The 45 cards night continues in Kilcolman on Thursday nights. Games start at 8pm upstairs in the new building and all are welcome. 

Club Lotto:

There was no winner of last Monday night’s club lotto jackpot. The numbers drawn were 5, 13, 15 & 21. The Lucky dip winners were Nicola Sharkey Newtown, Ann McCormack Gortmore & Ann Carroll Kilcolman. The Sellers Prize went to Christy Griffin. This week’s draw was in Reidy’s for a Jackpot of €5,300.

The 2018 club AGM is Friday 11th January at 8pm. Mass for deceased club members is at 7.30. Nomination forms are available upon request. All club members are welcome to attend.

After what has been a fantastic year for both clubs with our Burgess – Duharra ladies winning SEVEN county finals in a row and the Kilmacud All Ireland 7s, to name a few and our senior hurlers winning the Seamus O’Rian Senior County Championship we have a lot to celebrate!

Ebony will provide the entertainment on the night with a DJ to follow.

Tickets are €26 and can be purchased from any committee member! It’s going to be a fantastic night so be sure to get your tickets early!

The Chaser:

A massive thank you to everyone who supported The Chaser event in the Abbey Court hotel last Friday night. The night was a huge success with over 400 people in attendance and over €43k raised so far.

The attendance on the night and generosity of everyone who supported us has surpassed all expectations.

All money raised goes towards a 60 x 30 meter Fully Floodlit, 4G AstroTurf and Hurling Wall facility which your sons and daughters will benefit from for time to come.

Senior Hurling:

Well done to our senior hurlers and management who secured the clubs first ever senior championship title with a 1-11 to 0-13 win over Moycarkey Borris in the Seamus O’Riain final on Sunday. The win capped off a magnificent weekend for the club as straight after the win our glorious intermediate champions of 1993 were honoured on the field and joined in celebration with the men of 2018. Thanks to everyone who made it such a memorable day for the Parish.

Club tops:

Niall McGrath will be in Kilcolman next Thursday 25th from 7pm to 7.45pm with a sample of the new player sweater tops which will be worn on county final day for anyone wishing to order one. Adult Price is €45 (includes crest & initials), €40 without initials. Juvenile prices to be confirmed. Tribute Night:

We held a long overdue and richly deserved tribute night to honour the great Donie Nealon on Friday last. Comrades from the great Tipp team of the 60’s that Donie soldiered with along with rivals from that era were in attendance along with representative of the ’71, ’89 and ’91 teams that DonIe mentored. His service to the Munster council was also marked with colleagues from his time there also speaking. All in all it was a marvellous night filled with great stories and fun. A DVD will be available from Jim Egan for a cost of €10 fir those who couldn’t make it and anyone who’d like a memento of the night. We would especially like to thank John Hogan and his committee for their (covert) hard work in organising this great night in honour of Donie. Special mention too to Sinead and Nuala Nealon who managed to make the whole night a surprise for Donie and all the guests from near and far who came for Donie’s special night.

The Chaser:

Senior Hurling:

Well done tour senior hurlers who survived a Templederry second half comeback and regain senior roinn 1 status after winning Saturdays Seamus O’Riain semi-final 2-17 to 2-14. We will now play Moycarkey Borris in the final in Semple stadium ON ssunday 21st October at 13:15. We are looking for big support on the day as our 1993 county intermediate winning team will be honoured on the day also.

U16 Football:

Our u16 footballers were well beaten by Anner Gaels in the county semi final at the weekend.

Marin O’Leary Tournament:

Kilruane, Kiladangan and ourselves shared the spoils in the Martin O’Leary tounamen which took place on Saturday last in Kilcolman. A big thank you to Portroe, Kiladangan and Kilruane for taking part.

Cards:

The 45 cards will start again next Thursday, 4th October at 8pm in the new building in Kilcolman. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible in attendance – both new and old players are very welcome.
