The North Final 2012

I previously wrote about the conundrum I foresaw for myself regarding attending the North senior hurling final and I have to admit the extraordinary manner of Portroes victory won me over on the day. Congratulations to them on a wonderful victory.

The following is a brief match report.

Portroe in Dreamland

This counts as Sheedy’s greatest achievement in my opinion.Portroe is an extraordinary little parish. They punch above their weight and give quarter to no one.
There were delirious scenes in McDonagh Park today after the final whistle When Portroe won their first ever North Senior Hurling title.

Toomevara must be scratching there heads and wondering what the hell happened tonight. They went in a point up against the wind at half time 0:11 to 1:07 with their backs well on top. Benny Dunne especially so at centre back. He hoovered up oceans of ball and hurled it intelligently into the Toome forwards who themselves were showing well for it.
There are stories emerging here and there of what went on in the Portroe dressingroom at half time. What ever happened Portroe came out on fire for the second half.Benny Dunnes influence was curtailed and Portroe started wining possession, be it clean or broken in their half forward line and ran at the Toomevara defence. They drew fouls, which they converted through the person of John Sheedy (yes he is related to you know who) and took some sublime scores from play into the teeth of a strong crossing wind. Two cracking second half goals from Mike Sheedy (yes he is also related to you know who)and Mark Gennery broke Toomevara’s back and Portroe were in dreamland.

Toomevara will rue their massive wide count which included the most incredible missed goal chance I have ever seen. Willie Ryan who failed to convert from inside the small parallelogram, unmarked and with an open goal at his mercy will not want to look back at the match video. John O’Brien did get a late goal however which set up a grand stand finish with Portroe holding out for an Historic and richly deserved 3:16 to 1:19 victory.
Riotous, unrestrained and infectious scenes of raw emotion ensued as every man woman and child form the tiny parish and village of Portroe rushed the field to share in the victory with their heroes.
An Historic day that it was my pleasure and honour to bear witness to. A marvelous day to follow the G.A.A.
This is why our games are so great.
