This was an excellent team effort well done to everyone involved.

Burgess 1-11 Kildangan 0-18. North Junior A hurling

Burgess v Kildangan junior A #4

Team: Brian Sherlock, Kevin McDonnell, Robbie Cremin, Pat Woods, Tommy Walsh, Paidi McDonnell, Willie Ryan, Kieran Ryan, Sean Flynn, Bill Flaherty (0-2), Fergal McDonnell, Tadgh O’Halloran, Andy Dunne(0-3F), Colm O’Brien(1-1), Garrett Howard(0-5, 3F).

The first half was tit for tat with our points coming from Bill O’Flaherty, Garrett Howard, Colm O’Brien and Andy Dunne until Colm O’Brien got on the end of a Tadgh O’Halloran delivery and fired an unstoppable shot passed the Kildangan Keeper to stretch our lead to four points.

Our scoring dried up thereafter but for an Andy Dunnes 22nd minute free and we went in on level terms, 1-6 to 0-9, at half time.

Though we enjoyed periods of dominance in the second half we couldn’t seem to translate it into scores. Kildangan had no such problems unfortunately and always seemed to find the right man in space and take their scores. Our scorers for the second half were Andy Dunne (0-1 from a ’21 mtr free) and Garrett Howard (0-4, 2f). It always looked as if we’d need another goal to win this game and indeed Garrett Howard came closest to getting one when his 49th minute shot screamed over the bar for a point.

The final score line of 1-11 to 0-18 didn’t do justice to our efforts on the night but we can have no complaints. Kildangan took their chances and such fully deserved the win.

Burgess GAA notes 15th July 2013

Senior Hurling

Our senior hurlers had a busy week with a county championship rd 2 game v Cappawhite on Monday evening and then the Dr. Fogarty cup league final on Sunday night.

Burgess v Cappawhite Rd2 county senior hurling championship 2013 Burgess 0-22 Cappawhite 1-11

Burgess v Cappawhite 2013-10

The outcome of this round 2 county championship game dictated whether Burgess played in senior A or B next year and as such made it make or break for both sides.  We started the brighter, albeit the more wasteful, despite having the aid of the breeze.  After ten minutes we had edged in front, two points to one, our scores coming from both Eoin Hogans from play, however our wide count was seven to two.  We seemed a little nervous in front of goal despite our dominance in terms of ball possession and field position .

Cappawhite had the only goal of the game after 13 minutes of play and it was a rasper which gave Niall McGrath no chance.  The score stood at 1-2 to 0-3 at this point and despite our dominance we trailed by 2 points.  Well done to our lads though as they regrouped, recovered and lead for a time again before going in level at half time on this sweltering evening in Newport 1-7 to 0-10.

The second half had more bite to it and we began well with two excellent points from play from Danny Ryan and Damien O’Brien putting us 0-12 to 1-7 up after two minutes of the half. We dominated the remainder of the half with a display of accurate point taking from play and placed ball in what was becoming a fiery second half.  Indeed our free taker on the night helped himself to seven pointed frees in the second half.

In the end we held Cappa to only four scores in the second half against our twelve which resulted in our boys running out deserving winners 0-22 to 1.11. We now meet Borrisoleigh in the next round of the county championship

Innocent man

Innocent man

We set a blistering pace early on in this senior hurling league final leading 1-10 to 0-4 at half time. Our points coming from the two Eoins Hogans, three a piece, Kevin Nealon, Noel Gleeson, Jonathan Ryan and Conor Quigley. Our goal came from a deft flick by Brian Hogan after the ball was broken down into his path by Kevin Nealon.  Though we lead it was with the aid of a stiff breeze and we would be shooting into a low sun in the second half.

Eire Og came out with all guns blazing in the second half and had our lead pegged back to just three points 1-13 to 1-10 with 15 minutes left of normal time. Their comeback was completed at the stroke of normal time when they equalised to send the game to extra time at 1-14 each.

Extra time was tit for tat with both side exhausted and it was left to Tossy Hogan to tie the game up with a superbly taken pressure shot  at the death to leave the scores 1-18 all.

Well done to our lads for turning out two fine results within a week.

U12 Burgess v Roscrea Monday 8th July Burgess 4-9 Roscrea 1-0

Our U12’s had an excellent win in the baking heat in Kilcoleman on Monday evening last against a young Roscrea team.  Jack O’Keeffe opened our account with a point, this was quickly followed by a goal from Tom Gibson.  Sean Dunne got two great points with Jack O’Keeffe rounding off the first half with another great point.

Aaron Sharkey opened our scoring in the second half with a point, Roscrea quickly responded with an excellent goal. This was quickly cancelled out by a goal from Sean Dunne who also got three points in the half. Aaron Sharkey was next on the scoresheet with a great goal followed by Jack OKeeffe with an excellent point. Micheal Ryan in his debut for the U12s shot an excellent goal in the dying minutes of the game.

U12 Burgess v Newport Friday 12th July 2013. Burgess 6-10 Newport 2-4

Burgess continued their excellent run in this year championship with a good win over Newport in a very warm and sunny Kilcoleman on Friday evening last.

Sean Dunne continued his excellent form scoring a total of 3-4, Jack O’Keeffe had a total score of 1-5,  Cathal Conneally scored a great point, with Oisin Hynes coming out of goals to score an excellent goal.  Score of the match had to come from super sub Oisin Tucker on his debut for the U12s.  This was a great team performance well done to all involved.

Next match Tuesday 16th in Kilcoleman v Shannon Rovers all supported would be appreciated.

Burgess_v_Silvermines_2013_#7

Burgess v Silvermines minor hurling Dolla 3/7/2013

The first half was a tight affair in this minor B group 1 game. Burgess were first off the mark with an Andy Dunne pointed free inside the first minute.  Andy was on hand again to convert another free five minutes later to leave Burgess 0-2 to no score after six minutes of play.  Silvermines had the game level at two points each after 15 minutes when first Andy Dunne and then Keith Nealon tagged on two great scores from play inside a minute to put Burgess 2 points ahead. Three more frees for Andy Dunne with two from placed balls and one from play for Silvermines left the match delicately poised at half time. Burgess 0-6 Silvermines 0-5.

Sivermines struck first after the break with an early point after only a minute of play which levelled the game 0-6 each. One minute later Keith Nealon got on the end of an excellent Burgess move and smashed the ball into the Silvermines net putting us a goal up.  Things only got better 3 minutes later when Andy Dunne burst through the Silvermines defence and despite the attentions of three defenders he managed to direct his shot past the Sivermines keeper. 2-6 to 0-6 and we were in the driving seat.  Minutes later a fantastic Keith Nealon effort from play and another Andy Dunne free had us eight up, 2-8 to 0-6.

The Silvermines backlash began in the 37th minute of the game when they worked a goal from a half chance leaving the score a manageable 2-8 to 1-6. A fantastic individual score from Francis Munsterberg saw our lead increase for the last time in the game 2-9 to 1-6. The wind began to pick up and was in Silvermines favour for the remainder of the half and we struggled to get scores from play or placed ball. Silvermines to their credit made full use of both the wind and home advantage to tag on some fine scores.  Our final score came in the 55th minute from an Andy Dunne free.

Sivermines ran out winners in the end 2-15 to 2-10 but well done to our lads as they made a fancied Mines outfit work very hard for their win.

Burgess Scorers were Andy Dunne 1-7 (0-6f), Keith Nealon 1-2, Francis Munsterberg 0-1
