Burgess v Cappawhite 2013-10

The outcome of this round 2 county championship game dictated whether Burgess played in senior A or B next year and as such made it make or break for both sides. We started the brighter, albeit the more wasteful, despite having the aid of the breeze. After ten minutes we had edged in front, two points to one, our scores coming from both Eoin Hogans from play, however our wide count was seven to two. We seemed a little nervous in front of goal despite our dominance of ball possession and field position .

Cappawhite had the only goal of the game after 13 minutes of play and it was a rasper which gave Niall McGrath no chance. The score stood at 1-2 to 0-3 at this point and despite our dominance we trailed by 2 points. Well done to our lads though as they regrouped and recovered and lead for a time again before going in level at half time on this sweltering evening in Newport 1-7 to 0-10.

The second half had more bite to it and we began well with two excellent points from play from Danny Ryan and Damien O’Brien putting us 0-12 to 1-7 up after two minutes of the half. We dominated the remainder of the half with a display of accurate point taking from play and placed ball in what was becoming an increasingly niggly second half. Indeed our free taker on the night helped himself to seven pointed frees in the second half.

In the end we held Cappa to only four points in the second half against our twelve which resulted in our boys running deserving winners 0-22 to 1.11. We now meet Borrisoleigh in the next round of the county championship
