U16’s pipped by Portroe

U16B north Hurling final Sunday 22nd September

u16’s

Our u16s gave a rousing display of guts and determination against a strong Portroe outfit in the North Tipperary u16 final in Puckane on Sunday last.

We had wind advantage in the first half but it was Portroe who got off to a lightening start racing into 0-9 to 0-2 lead after 13 minutes. The start of our fightback began when Francis Munsterberg raced through the Portroe defence and fired a bullet into the Port net. We didn’t achieve the lead until the 27th minute when once again the Portroe defence was split. This time Conor Gill was the man to race through the Port defence and again set the Port net dancing. The half time score saw the game all square at 2-7 to 0-13.

The second half was an uphill battle for us considering the strength of the wind and indeed we found scores hard to come by. Great credit is due to our boys that they never gave up and fought to the bitter end. In the end we were defeated by the smallest of margins, 4-9 to 0-22.

Well done to players and management. We would like to thank them for the work they have put in this year and the tremendous entertainment they have given us. Chins up lads, there will be better days ahead! We’re very proud of you.

The team that started: Paul Carroll, Keith Mulqueen, Drew Boland, Jack Maloney, Ronan Tucker, Lee Howard, Aaron Quigley, William Fogarty, Francis Munsterberg, Adrian Burke, Conor Gill, Aidan O’Flaherty David Nevin, Keith Nealon, Jack Boland. Subs: Lee Keays, James Fogarty, Sean O’Neill, Alan McGrath, Peter Reynolds.

Burgess u21’s defeat Borrisoleigh

U21A Hurling

Full blooded

Burgess v Borrisoleigh 21st Sept 2013

Borrisoleigh started the brighter on a smashing evening for hurling in Nenagh and were two points up within two minutes. Eoin Hogan had a pointed free a minute later to get us off the mark and with fine shot from the wing he had the game level after four minutes of play. By the 17th minute we were 8 points to 3 down with a worrying proportion of the scores we conceded coming either directly from frees or from attacks set up by frees. At this point the game seemed to be getting away from us.

Then in the 21st minute after a fantasticl length of the field move Andy Dunne delivered the perfect ball for Eoin Hogan to double on to the back of the Borrisoleigh net. This brought us right back into the game with the score now 1-5 to 0-9. However disaster stuck in the 27th minute when a long range Borris shot deceived everyone coming out of the sun and found the Burgess net leaving the score 1-7 to 1-10. A fantastic Andy Dunne goal in the 31st minute saw us level with Borris half time with the score tied at 2-7 to 1-10.

The second half was tit for tat for the opening 12 minutes until Andy Dunne rattled the Borris net bagging his second goal of the game and putting some daylight between the sides at 3-10 to 1-11. We held onto our lead for the reminder of the game. The final highlight of the game came in the 21st minute of the 2nd half when Andy Dunne rounded off a productive afternoon by completing his hat-trick. The final score of 1-16 to 4-13 fairly reflected our dominance on the day and hopefully will drive us on to greater things.

The Team that lined out: Brian Sherlock, Willie Ryan, John O’Dwyer, Pat Woods, Tommy Walsh, Jack Flaherty, Tony Hogan, Mike Flaherty, Kieran Ryan, Tadgh O’Halloran, Peter Gill, Bill O’Flaherty, Danny Ryan, Eoin Hogan, Andy Dunne.

Subs used: JP Grace, Dan Nevin, Paidi Gill.

Burgess GAA notes 15 September 2013

North minor B hurling Final

Burgess 0-15 Ballina 1-16

Our minor Hurlers

We led 0-10 to 0-4 at half time with the aid of the wind in Dolla. This lead however proved to be insufficient as an early goal settled Ballina into their stride. Our lads fought hard all the way but Ballina ran out deserving winners on a final score of 1-16 to 0-15. We would like to thank all the panel and mentors for their efforts throughout the year and wish Ballina success in the county series.

U16 hurling

Well done to the u16’s who defeated Kildangan in the north semi-final on Wednesday evening last 2-16 to 2-13. No fixture for the final is available at the time of writing but keep an eye on the fixtures list here and on the club facebook page for further information.

u21 hurling

We face Borrisoleigh in rd1 on Saturday 21-9-2013 at 2:30pm in Nenagh. This game will determine whether we go into the losers group or proceed straight into the knockout stages and extra time will be played if necessary. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Burgess GAA notes 8 September 2013

Minor B hurling Semi-final

Burgess 3-20 Silvermines 1-11

Final Score

The Burgess minor hurlers put in a masterful first half performance against the Silvermines in the North B semi-final in Nenagh on Tuesday 3rd September. Such was our dominance that it took 15 minutes for the Silvermines to register their first score.

Burgess dominated every line of the field and were worth every bit of their 3-12 to 1-2 lead at half time. Among the highlights of this dazzling first half performance were Keith Nealon’s two pointed line balls, one from either side of the field!

With the game effectively over at half time, Silvermines to their credit, never dropped their heads and fought gamely on throughout the second half but it was to no avail. The Burgess scores kept coming and the resolute defending of the Burgess backs wouldn’t allow the mines in for the goals they so desperately needed.

This victory is especially pleasing considering we had been well beaten in Dolla by this highly regarded Mines outfit earlier in the championship. Great credit is due to players and management for the huge improvements that have been made and we can now look forward to a North final battle against Ballina on Sunday 15th September, please check fixtures section for further details. I’m sure our boys can be sure of getting the massive support from the whole parish that they so richly deserve.

The Team: Paul Carroll, Shane Griffin, Tony Gleeson, Dan Nevin, Lee Howard, Pat Woods, Adam Coady, Paidi Gill, Conor Gill, Tommy Coghlan, Owen Daily, Andy Dunne, Keith Nealon, Bill Flaherty, Shane McCarthy. Subs used: Francis Munsterberg, Hughie O’Brien, Jack Gill, Jack Boland and Costelloe

Kilmacud 7’s

Hard luck to our boys who took part in the Kimacud 7’s over the weekend. We failed to qualify for the knockout stages though we were undefeated in Group 1.
