Burgess advance to League Semi-Final

Burgess 3-20 Killenaule 2-11

Burgess had the better start in this Dr. Fogarty league cup quarter final in Kilcolman on Sunday last. With 17 minutes elapsed Burgess led killenaule 1-8 to 0-3. The Burgess goal came in the 16th minute when Bill O’Flaherty got on the end of a long ball and fired a rasping shot from an acute angle leaving the Killenaule goalie no chance. Killenaule then hit a purple patch of their own shooting 1-5 without reply. A late Stephan Murray point from play sent Burgess in at half time with a one point lead, 1-9 to 1-8.

The tone for the second half was set by Eoin Leahy Hogan within thirty seconds of the restart when got inside the Killenaule defence and found the net putting Burgess four points up. Three more points from play had the Burgess lead stretched out to seven points before Killenaule got their first score of the second half after 10 minutes of play. Burgess tagged on four more points putting them 10 points ahead by the 20th minute. Killenaule were then awarded a 21 metre free which they goaled leaving them 7 points adrift with the score 2-16 to 2-9.

Burgess outscored Killenaule by 1-4 to Killenaules 0-02 for the remaining 10 minutes of the match, the Burgess goal coming from a Stephan Murray 21 metre free with three minutes remaining. Burgess will be happy with their display and have now accounted for the South and West champions in their league title defence.
