Thanks once again to Liam Hogan who unearthed this song of praise the men of Youghalarra who claimed the North senior championship of 1909.

    Thanks Liam for the contribution. I don’t know who P.B. (the poet) was / is but the “de Wets” would seem to be members of the famous South African family who fought against British occupation of their country.

    A father and two brothers, they very successfully employed the “strike and run” tactics of the Boer commandos, refusing to engage in conventional pitched battles against superior forces.

    One of the British commanders killed in action against them at the battle Mujaba Hil in the 1st Boer War, was Major-General Sir George Pomeroy Colley, b. Dublin 1/11/1835, son of the Hon. George Colley MP.

    p.s. Having given it more thought, is there any chance that P.B. was one of the Bonfields?
