Burgess GAA notes 4th May 2015

Junior A hurling:

cothrom na Féinne?

cothrom na Féinne?

We played Kildangan on Friday last in the Junior A league and were well beaten for a finish on a score of 1-19 to 0-9. We finished the game with 12 players on the field in a game that was by no means dirty. Kildangans numerical advantage goes some way towards explaining the margin of the loss but there is no doubt that we must work on improving our on-field discipline. We face  Kilruane next in this competition at a date and time to be confirmed.

Senior Hurling:

Our final group game of the County Senior Hurling Championship takes place on Saturday May 9th at 7pm in Nenagh against Borris Ileigh. We must win this game in order to retain our Roinn 1 status next year and have any hope of playing a further part in the county championship. We ask for your support for the lads in this crunch game.

A piece of History:

We would like to thank local publican Jim Barry for sharing the original club accounts for the Duharra Senior Hurling team for the years 1930 to 1931 as compiled by his father, the then club secretary John Barry, 85 years ago. The notebook is in remarkably good condition and offers a fascinating insight into the running if a GAA club in times past. It contains wonderful details from the purchase of hurling balls to lists of players and results of games. The document has been scanned and is available to view and download on the club website on this link http://1drv.ms/1EZUrJ8. This was an entirely unexpected act of generosity by Jim and we thank him for sharing  this piece of history with us, A hard copy of the scan will be available to view in the new building in Kilcolman.

If anyone else out there has any material they believe is of historical value to the club we would love to see it and possibly photograph or scan it.  You can contact club PRO Padraig Hogan or any club officer if there is anything you’d like to share with the club.

Duharra Hurling Club accounts 1930 – 1931

Huge thanks to local publican Jim Barry for sharing a notebook of accounts for the Duharra Senior Hurling club dating back to the year 1930 which belonged to his father and Duharra club secretary John Barry. The accounts detail the costs of sliotars, printing of tickets and purchasing of medals amongst many other insights. Most interesting is a list of the Senior players and a couple of results against Dolla and Ballinaclough.

You can download a PDF of the notebook on this link http://1drv.ms/1GIvKMe
