Match Report Senior League Burgess v Ballina

County Senior League: Burgess 1-28 Ballina 1-17

March 13th 2016, Kilcoleman.

FINAL SCORE

Our senior hurlers posted a fine home win over Ballina today in the county senior league. Ballina had to do without their county man Michael Breen who was on duty with Tipp senior hurlers in Salthill.

The match itself was played at very high tempo with our forwards working extremely well in the first half. After 10 minutes we led 0-10 to 0-4 with a fine spread of scorers. Two extremely long range Stephen Murray pointed line balls especially caught the eye.

We continued with our high rate of scoring for the remainder of the half. Ballina however  launched something of a comeback towards the end of the half to close the gap to 0-18 to 0-11 at half time.

We were to the fore again at the start of the second half registering the opening three scores before Ballina got off the mark on the fortieth minute to reduce our lead to 10 points, the scoreboard reading  0-22 to 0-12. The pace the scores came at didn’t match the opening half’s rate of roughly one a minute but there was still plenty of action with Ballina’s Goalie being pressed into action on  a couple of occasions to make dramatic saves. Keith Nealon was the one to finally find the net on the fiftieth minute when Shane Maher’s hard work put him through on goal to make the score Burgess 1-23 Ballina 0-14.

The final 10 minutes saw plenty of action with our lads adding another 5 points  to our tally and Ballina doing likewise adding 1-3. The Ballina goal coming from a well struck  58th minute Stephen O’Brien penalty.

This win sees us gain home advantage against Mullinahone next week in the 2nd round of the league.
