County Senior League – Burgess 1-15 Holycross Ballycahill 3-17
A heavily depleted Burgess outfit hurled with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half of this county league group game and though they had twenty scoring opportunities in the opening period their return was a meagre ten points. Holycross goaled in the 7th minute to gain the lead for the first time in the match 1-02 to 0-3 after some good combination play. Burgess, despite their ferocious wide count, had the game on level terms by the 18th minute but just could not make their wind assisted dominance count on the score board and they were all square at half time, Burgess 0-10 Holycross Ballycahill 1-7.
The second half was tit for tat with points until the 23rd minute when a Niall McGrath was deceived a ball that took and unfortunate hop to push Holycross into a one goal lead. Holycross immediately added a point from the puckout to go four in front. Burgess struck back immediately with a goal from Ronan Tucker to leave a point between the teams Burgess 1-15 Holycross 2-13 and five minutes remaining. But disaster struck and Holycross had the ball in the Burgess net almost immediately after Ronans effort. Holycross tacked on four more unanswered points in the remaining couple of minutes to give them a flattering 3-17 to 1-15 win. Burgess will rue their 17 wides, two gilt edged goal chances amongst them. Best on show for Burgess were the half back line of JP Grace John O’Dwyer and Johnny Mulqueen. Keith Nealon and Danny Ryan hurled very well also.
Burgess Team: Niall McGrath, Pat Woods, Jack O’Flaherty, Willie Ryan,, Johnny Mulqueen, John O’Dwyer, JP Grace, Kieran Ryan (0-1), Danny Ryan (0-2), John O’Brien (0-1), Keith Nealon (0-8 4f), Paddy Hogan, Ronan Tucker (1-2), Shane Maher (0-1), Eoin Hogan. Subs used: Brian Hogan, Tadhg O’Halloran.
