17523187_1395840263785209_218671395506640153_n

Burgess had things well under control for the 1st quarter of an hour of this game with a lead of 1-5 to 0-2. The Burgess scores coming from Bill O’Flaherty, Stephen Murray, Eoin Hogan and Danny Ryan. Ryan goaled after collecting a break from a long range John O’Dwyer free and his finish was the definition of clinical. Stephen Murray caught the eye too with a point from a monstrous side line cut. Brackens to their credit launched a comeback after being stung by the concession of the goal and hit three on the trot to leave just a goal between the teams with 25 minutes gone.  That however was a close as Brackens would get as three more Burgess point’s courtesy of Stephen Murray and Keith Nealon left the half time score Burgess 1-8 JK Brackens 0-9.

Burgess got off to a blistering start to the second half and stretched their lead to 2-9 to 0-6 within a couple of minutes of the restart. Murray was first to register with a point followed by Eoin Leahy Hogan who bagged the goal with an expertly placed shot past the Brackens keeper. Five minutes later Burgess heaped on more misery for Brackens through Bill O’Flaherty who also found the net. Brackens tried hard but just couldn’t unlock the Burgess defence. They even had a penalty rebound off the upright only to be cleared down the field. Burgess ran out comfortable winners in the end with a final score line of Burgess 3-13 JK Brackens 0-9.

Burgess defeat JK Brackens in Senior League

Warm down after the win

Warm down after the win

Burgess 2-11 – JK Brackens 2-10

In glorious spring sunshine Burgess claimed their first competitive senior win of the year with a one point victory over JK Bracken’s in the county senior league.

Brackens enjoyed a strong wind to their backs in the first half but failed to take full advantage. In fact it was 11 minutes before they registered their first score. Though Brackens were first on the score board Burgess could have easily had 1-4 notched but for wayward shooting. Burgess hadn’t to wait too long to get off the mark when Brian Hogan found the net a minute after the Brackens opened their account. Brackens forged ahead after more wayward Burgess shooting and by the twentieth minute led, 1-3 to 1-0. Three minutes later Eoin Hogan had our first point of the game, a fine effort from the wing into the breeze. Straight from the resulting puckout in a move that reeked of class Burgess had the game by the scruff of the neck when Stephen Murray, with the deftest of touches lobbed the Brackens keeper and put us in the lead, 2-1 to 1-3. But by the 24th minute Brackens had restored parity with a pointed 21 metre free. Five minutes later Stephen Murray restored our lead with a mirror image pointed 21 of his own making the score 2-2 to 1-4. Brackens were back on terms straight from the puckout, however, with a fine point from play. Another long range free at the stroke of halftime gave Brackens a slender interval lead with scoreboard reading Burgess 2-2, JK Brackens 1-6.

Burgess, now wind assisted, levelled the game with scarcely a minute elapsed through Noel Gleeson after some fine link up play. A minute later Stephen Murray was out in front after an intelligent early delivery from Timmy Hogan to burn his marker and put Burgess into a one point lead. 2-4 to 1-6. Murray pointed once again on the fourth minute after being set up by Brian Hogan to increase our advantage to two points. Brackens clawed back a point through a free after Paddy Hogan was harshly judged to have over carried the ball out of defence. 2-4 to 1-7. Stephen Murray was on hand again to point a close in free after Brian Hogan was felled as he raced through the Brackens defence. 1-7 to 2-6. Murray was on hand again to score from play after he showed well for a free from Timmy Hogan out of defence to stretch the Burgess lead to a clear goal. 2-7 to 1-7. After furious end to end hurling Brackens notched a fine point from play to reduce the Burgess lead to two points. 2-7 to 1-8. Burgess, however, responded almost immediately with clinical point by Eoin Hogan to restore our one goal lead. 2-8 to 1-8. A malfunction on the Brackens short puckout gifted the ever alert and predatory Eoin Hogan another point from play in the seventeenth minute. The Burgess lead extended to five points moments later when Stephen Murray fired over a long range free making the score Burgess 2-10, JK Brackens 1-8. Another free and another point from Murray. Burgess were now cruising with twenty one minutes gone and their lead stretched out to a comfortable six points, 2-11 to 1-8. Brackens however hadn’t come to Kilcolman to make up the numbers and bagged 1-2 in the final 9 minutes to leave Burgess the winners by the slenderest of margins, 2-11 to 2-10.

Burgess Team: Brian Sherlock, Paddy Hogan, Johnny Mulqueen, Jack O’Flaherty, Shane Maher, Donagh Maher, Timmy Hogan,  Mike O’Flaherty, Peter Gill, Tadgh O’Halloran, Brian Hogan, Noel Gleeson, Keith Nealon, Eoin Leahy Hogan, Stephen Murray. Subs used: Damien O’Brien. Johnny Ryan
