Match Report – U16 footballers reach North Final

The Burgess U16 footballers played Moneygall/ Clonakenny in the Football semifinal this evening at 7pm in Moneygall. Burgess played into the wind and up the hill in the 1st half. It was always going to be a tight game as we had lost to them by 1 point in an earlier round.

The 1st half finished on score line of 4 points each. In the second half against the run of play MG/CY scored a soft goal. But credit to the Burgess lads they didn’t panic and scored the next 4 points without reply.

Poor discipline by MG/CY lead to them losing 2 players. With the seconds counting down MG/CY won a free 14 metres out. The free was saved on the line and the referee blew the final whistle leaving Burgess through to the final on a scoreline of Burgess 0-08 to Moneygall/Clonakennys 1-04.

We will be underdogs in the final but we know the lads will give everything.

Big thank you to Pat Gibson for supplying the match report.

Match report: u16 footballers reach north semi final after defeating Newport

Well done to our U16 footballers whom defeated Newport on a score of 4-14 to 0-05 in Newport this evening. This was another step in the right direction with our work rate and teamwork top class. Our scoring was impressive with scores spread across the team. Our controlled agression has improved with a reduction in conceeding needless frees. We have now qualified for the semifinal with one game still to be played against Ballina.

Thanks to Pat Gibson for supplying the match report.

Match Report:: Burgess v Ballina county senior league 2017

Burgess had a comfortable home win over neighbours Ballina in the opening game of the county league on Sunday last in Kilcoleman. Stephen Murray’s point in the opening ten seconds of the game gave Burgess a lead that the wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the match. Indeed it wasn’t until the disruption caused to the Burgess defence by the loss of captain Johnny Mulqueen to injury in the twentieth minute of the first half that Ballina managed to mount a come back and cut the deficit from 7 points to 2 at half time with the score board reading Burgess 0-10 Ballina 0-8. Burgess also had a strong claim for a penalty denied in the first half after Tossy Hogan was rugby tackled as he bore down on the Ballina goal.

Burgess managed to tack on another nine points in the second half to Ballina’s one to run out easy winners 0-18 to 0-9. Burgess will be happy with the spread of scorers considering the loss of scorer in chief Stephen Murray to injury early in the second half.
