Burgess gaa notes August 21st 2017

Senior Hurling:
Our senior hurlers await news on their relegation fixtures. With Kiladangan eliminated from the North at the weekend and after Carrick Swans win in the south the structure of the play off is still unknown and unknowable at this point. Keep an eye on the clubs social media for more information as it arises.
Dermot Hogan Memorial Tournament:

Despite heavy persistent rain a fine crowd of Burgess and Coolderry Gaels assembled in Kilcolman on Saturday last as the minor & senior hurlers of Burgess and Coolderry played out two enthralling exhibition games. In the first game the Coolderry minors proved too strong for a depleted Burgess side and ran out 3-15 to 2-12 winners. This game was remarkable for the quality of score taken by both sides despite the torrential rain. There are some team and action photos from the game on the club facebook page.

The senior game was a more low scoring affair as the underfoot conditions deteriated further . Coolderry took a 2 point lead in at half time leading 0-5 to 0-7 but Burgess cancelled that lead within about two minutes of the restart and lead for the majority of the half but a late rally and a goal by Coolderry saw them snatch the win with the final score reading Burgess 0-13 Coolderry 1-13.

Afterwards refreshments were served for players and supporters in the hall and the Hogan family presented commemorative trophies to the captains of all four teams.

We would like to wish our friends in Coolderry the best of luck in the KNOCKOUT PHASE OF THE Offaly county championship and thank them for making the trip down to visit us.

Kiladangan and Carrick Swan can escape relegation should they manage to win their divisional championships. We play Coolderry next week in Kilcolman in the Dermot Hogan Memorial tournament.

U16 Hurling:

Burgess U16 played Borrisokane in round 3 of the north championship on Tuesday last at 7pm in Kilcoleman. In what was a keenly contested game with only a puck of the ball separating the teams throughout. Borrisokane lead by 2 points at half time. The game continued in the same vain for the second half with both teams fighting for every possession and score. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be Burgess day as we went down by 3 points on a final score line of Burgess 2-07, Borrisokane 1-13. Burgess can be proud of their work rate and this was their best performance so far.

Burgess GAA Notes 3rd July 2017

Senior Hurling:
We are fixed to play Roscrea away on Sunday 16th July at 12pm in our final county league group fixture. This is a must win game for us to advance in this competition.

Junior A Hurling:

Our Junior A hurlers qualified for the North Junior A league final by beating Nenagh on Wednesday evening last 1-15 to 0-11. Unfortunately though were beaten by a very efficient Toomevara outfit in the North league final on Sunday last. 4-18 to 2-14.

We left ourselves too much work to do against the wind in the second half but fair play to our lads they never gave up and stayed battling to the end.

Congratulations to Toome on a fine display.

We will begin our North championship campaign against Nenagh on the weekend of July 8th. See the Guardian fixtures and the clubs social media for further fixture information.

Some video footage from our junior games:

Juvenile fixtures:

U10 Hurling:

Our u10’s played a good tough challenge match against Kiladangan GAA in Kilcoleman on Tuesday last. Well done to both teams for putting in a fine full blooded display of hurling.

U12 Hurling:

Our U12 Hurlers played Borrisokane in the last round group game in Borrisokane on Friday evening. Burgess played the first half against a strong breeze we went in at half time with the score 4 points a piece.

In the second half 2 quick Borrisokane goals put us under immense pressure but we kept the score board ticking over with points until we hit the net to go 1 point up. But on the puck out Borrisokane responded with a goal of their own. Again the lads battled on and levelled it with 2 well worked points to square it up. Then a well worked goal in the last minute put us 3 points up. But again, with the last puck of the game Borrisokane responded with a goal off their own to level it up.
FT Score

Burgess 2-10

Borrisokane 4-4.

That leaves us top of the table and unbeaten in the group stages and should guarantee us a home semi spot. This team has again showed us great heart and their never say die attitude. Even when the chips were down they battled away to very nearly take the win. A Great little team !! Well done

U17 Blitz:

Kilcolman hosted an u17 seven-a-side blitz on Saturday. It was a useful run out for our non exam-bound hurlers. We would like to thank Nenagh Éire Óg, Kilruane McDonaghs and Newport for attending. Thanks also to the clubs three ref’s Pat Gibson, Peter Carroll and Garrett Howard for officiating abd all who helped out on the day.

Well done to our ‘Green’ 12 Hurlers who kicked off the championship with a win over Kiladangan 1-7 to 2-2 on Friday evening.
In a tight game they fought from 2pts down in the last 10min to scored 1-4 without reply and go 5 up. A late Kiladangan goal left for a trilling finish. Our lads held out for the 2pt win.
Hard luck to our ‘Gold’  team who were beaten by a strong Kiladangan side. We did well to finish with 2 good goals but Kiladangan were just too good on the night.

Club Lotto:

U14 Football:

Burgess 1-8 Ballina 0-8

U16 Football:

Hard luck to the U16s who went down fighting against a strong Ballina team in the North Final. Great rally in the second half to respond to those Ballina goals. Another well turned out team from Burgess. They are a great credit to the parish and the lads over them.
Congratulations & best of luck to the Ballina GAA lads in the county championship.

Senior Hurling:

Striking Video:

With our minor and underage hurlers in mind we have created this instructional video on striking (the ball!). We would urge all of our players and their parents alike to take a look at the footage and take on board some the tips shown.
And who better to demonstrate striking but current senior hurler and one of the best strikers of the ball you’re likely see, our very own Stephen Murray.
We would like to thank Declan Kirwan, whose brainchild this project this is, for his vision and for putting the work into producing this video. We would also like to thank Fergal McDonnell for his input and for doing such a professional job with the editing. Finally thanks to Stephen Murray and Stephen Kirwan who did so well in front of the cameras.

Burgess GAA Notes 17th April 2017

Junior A Hurling:
Our junior A’s were beaten by Toomevara in the North league on Saturday evening. We were short a lot of players and our cause wasn’t helped by the loss or Tadhg O’Halloran Toome put in a strong second half to run out deserving 0-16 to 2-6 winners. We had a bad day at the office where nothing seemed to go right. Hard luck lads.

Senior Hurling:

With Tipp playing the league final next weekend it looks like our championship opener v Killenaule will take place on Friday week.

U14 Hurling:

Pride of the parish this week are our u14’s who completed the Feile double when they claimed the hurling crown at the weekend by beating Kiladangan 1-5 to 0-5. This was a fantastic achievement as we were very short on numbers over Easter and it was touch and go as to whether we would be able to field a team. The win was especially satisfying as the cup our lads brought home was a Burgess one, the Maher Twins memorial cup presented to the north board by the Maher families in memory of Jack and Denny Maher. We would also like wish u14 hurler Sean Fitzgerald all the best in his recovery after his injury last week.

Minor Hurling:

Our minors were well beaten by Portroe on Thursday last in their opening game of the championship. We were short a number of players were surprised that this fixture was made go ahead given our previous communications with Portroe and north board.

U16 Football:

Well done to our U16 footballers whom defeated Newport on a score of 4-14 to 0-05 in Newport this evening. This was another step in the right direction with our work rate and teamwork top class. Our scoring was impressive with scores spread across the team. Our controlled agression has improved with a reduction in conceeding needless frees. We have now qualified for the semifinal with one game still to be played against Ballina. Thanks to Pat Gibson for supplying the match report.

U12 Football:

Our u12’s suffered their first loss of the season against Kilruane on Friday last. Our lads fought hard in the second to leave only a goal between the teams. Burgess 0-5, Kilruane 1-5.

Best of luck to Stephen Kirwan who lines out with the Tipperary GAA u17’s against Cork on Tuesday night.
