Burgess GAA Notes 1st August 2016

Chris Cooney R.I.P.

On Thursday last we were saddened to learn of the passing of club president Chris Cooney. Chris had been a fantastic club man throughout his life and will missed by all his friends in Burgess GAA. We would like to extend our sympathy to his wife Kit children Paddy, Kevin, Deirdre, Brian and Catherine. And to all his grandchildren, friends and relatives.

A few words from Michael Slattery Burgess Juvenile Club chairman in honour of the late Chris Cooney RIP.

On behalf of the Burgess Juvenile Club, I would like to offer our condolences to the family of the late Chris Cooney. Having grown up at the same time as his children I, along with most other lads my age in this parish, would have been befriended by Chris below in the hurling field. He had a great love for and connection to the the young. In later years he got to return to the field, this time with his grandchildren. The obvious pleasure people took in seeing him back says far more about the man than any words can convey. He will be remembered with a smile

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dílis.

Match Report Burgess v Mullinahone Senior Challenge Cup

Burgess v Mullinahone 20th March 2016 – Kilcoleman

Burgess 3-13 Mullinahone 0-15 County Senior Challenge Cup

The opening exchanges in this game were marked by fierce tackling by the Mullinahone backs. This was a definite step up in intensity from our first game in this competition last week against Ballina. This ferocity in the tackle may go some way toward explaining our wayward shooting in the first half which was completely at odds with the accuracy displayed last week.

The game started brightly for us with Stephen Murray firing over a lovely point off his left hand side from the touch line straight from the throw in. Murray would add two more frees to leave us 3 points to 1 ahead with 10 minutes played. By this point it was apparent that we weren’t going to see as high scoring a game as we had  the previous week against Ballina with both sets of backs taking no prisoners.

By the 15th minute we were 2 points down with Mullinahone racing into a 2 point lead, 5 to 3. Our wide count was now beginning to look very worrying indeed.

Two excellent long range points from Brian Hogan and a Murray free along with three more points from Mullinahone left us 2 points adrift despite creating the Lion’s share of scoring chances with 3 minutes remaining in the half.

Mullinahone, poised to go in ahead at half time, were rocked by 2 goals scored in under a minute. The first, a bullet, from Bill O’Flaherty who collected a breaking ball and got inside the Mullinahone defence to blast a shot past the Mullinahone keeper. The second came almost straight from the resulting puck out when Shane Maher’s hard work created an opportunity to work the ball into Damien O’Brien who made no mistake in placing the ball into the Mullinahone net.

So when the half time whistle blew Burgess went in an unlikely four points ahead. Burgess 2-6 Mullinahone 0-8

Once again straight from the throw in it was Stephen Murray got the scoring underway with fine point from 50m. Three minutes later the ever accurate Eoin Kelly replied with a pointed free for Mullinahone. A minute later though, Kelly’s point was more than cancelled out when Bill O’Flaherty scrambled home his second goal for the day to give us a healthy 3-7 to 0-9 lead. The Mullinahone backs had failed to deal with a long range Murray free leaving Bill with a simple tap in. Three minutes later a harsh over carrying call against Tossy gave Eoin Kelly another pointed free, this time from the middle of the field. Burgess answered that score immediately with an absolute monster of a score from Noel Gleeson. Another two pointed frees from Kelly left the score Burgess 3-8 Mullinahone 0-12 after 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Our indiscipline was allowing Mullinahone back into this game.

Yet another Kelly free was answered by an excellent Donagh Maher point from play and another Murray pointed free. The scoring for the afternoon was rounded out by Brian Hogan and Stephen Murray for Burgess with Eoin Kelly remaining Mullinahone’s only scorer in the second half, finishing with 7 pointed frees for the second period.

The final score Burgess 3-13 to Mullinahone’s 0-15 was a fair reflection on our efforts over the sixty minutes though with so much of Mullinahone’s tally coming from placed balls we will certainly have to take a look at our discipline.

The team that started: Niall McGrath, John O’Dwyer, Jack O’Flaherty, Willie Ryan, Kieran Ryan, Donagh Maher, Noel Gleeson, Brian Hogan, Eoin Tossy Hogan, Damien O’Brien, Stephen Murray, Bill O’Flaherty, Keith Nealon, Shane Maher, Danny Ryan.
